Carthay is a neighborhood located in central Los Angeles, California, near the heart of the city. It is an area that consists of three Historic Preservation Zoned (HPOZ) neighborhoods known as South Carthay, Carthay Circle, and Carthay Square. The three neighborhoods received their HPOZ designations in 1985, 1998, and 2017, respectively.
It is known for its historic architecture, tree-lined streets, and proximity to some of Los Angeles' most popular attractions, including the Wilshire Boulevard shopping district and the Miracle Mile.
The Carthay neighborhood was originally developed in the 1920s and 1930s and is renowned for its beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean-style homes. Many of these homes feature stucco exteriors, red-tiled roofs, and lush landscaping, which give the neighborhood a charming, old-world feel.
In addition to its historic homes, Carthay is home to a number of cultural landmarks and institutions, including the Carthay Circle Theater, a historic movie palace that was once a center of the city's entertainment scene. The theater has since been restored and converted into a luxury condominium complex.
The Carthay neighborhood is also known for its parks and green spaces, including Carthay Park and Carthay Center Park, which offer residents opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
The real estate market in Carthay is highly desirable, with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. The area is known for its high home prices, with a median home price well above the city's average. Despite its high prices, the Carthay neighborhood remains a popular choice among home buyers and investors, due to its central location, historical charm, and high quality of life.
